Ironically enough, Wave was a great platform, may they rest in peace. But making something a platform is not going to make you an instant success. A platform needs a killer app.
Buried deep in Steve Yegge's insightful and well publicised rant on Google's misplaced preference for products over platforms.

In another era this might have been discussed in terms of user programmability, but that may be being lost even by Apple in its quest to serve the rest of them.
